Economics of De Risking World Tailings Storage Facilities at US$0.01/MT

December 2, 2024

Derisking the world's 12,000 tailing storage facilities (“TSF’s) against potential failures would cost an estimated US$22bn, a small cost compared to an estimated US$688bn in potential liabilities.  However, the study dismisses the practicality of derisking the pre-exiting TSFs, indicating a more likely path toward safety is to build new TSF’s with higher safety standards.  Regardless, EcoVAP believes that by inexpensively de-watering many of these TSFs, thus reducing or eliminating the risk of breeches, overflows or leaks, the safety of both new and old TSFs can be practically eliminated.
